If the Shire of Cabonne was to have a capital it would be MOLONG. The main Council building and Council Chambers which sit halfway up Bank Street, shows many examples of Austen - European architecture and are classified by the National Trust. There are also many other beautiful historic buildings scattered throughout the town including the Cobb & Co Coach House. The town has excellent facilities including a Hospital, Doctors, Dentist, Vet Clinic, Ambulance, Fire Station, Aged Care Facilities as well as Hotels, a Club, an Art Gallery, B and B’s, Cellar Doors, an extensive shopping centre, Caravan Park, Pool, Cycle track and Skate Park. Education facilities include Central School, Catholic Primary School, a Preschool and Playgroup. The recently completed Council Health Centre caters for many visiting specialists and Health Professionals. Several cafes await the visitor and the Gelato Factory on the corner of the road to Cudal and Manildra is a must for travellers.
Molong is an outstanding farming district producing eggs, wheat, sheep, wool, cattle, fruit and wine. Copper Hill on the outskirts of town await a new mining operation and a small number of successful wholesale and manufacturing companies ensure good employment.
About 3 kms out of Molong on the Orange Road is the turnoff to the marked grave of Yuranigh the Aboriginal guide to Sir Thomas Mitchell. A great bushman and described by Mitchell as a “Guide, Companion and Friend”, Yuranigh accompanied Mitchell on his Queensland expedition in 1845. When Mitchell heard of Yuranigh’s death he paid for the headstone to mark the resting place. According to custom he was buried with a carved tree at the 4 corners of his grave indicating Yuanigh was a man of special honour. Easy to find and well signposted, this site is now cared for by the National Parkes and Wildlife Service.
